The Pickaxe Collective was formed in the fall of 2023 by Alex Suderman (vocals and guitar), Carla Suderman (vocal), Martin Schönfeld (drums and percussion), Santosh Geck (keyboard), Markus Pauls (electric guitar), Jackson Suderman (bass), aka Vernier Smilez, and Marla Stripp (violin).
On February 23, 2024, the Pickaxe Collective played their first gig at Subrosa in Dortmund. Supported by friends, this was a fantastic event, playing songs from what would become their first album, Hymns of New Wine.
Following the Subrosa Gig, Brandon Fehderau from Kitchener, Canada, and founder of Mkondo Studio made a makeshift music studio at PräsentKirche, where the band hammered out the songs in one week.
After a few months of further production, mixing, and mastering, Hymns of New Wine was released along with artwork from Virginia Russo. You can see the artwork here. The Release Party was held at TYDE in Dortmund.
Olivia Suderman replaced Jackson Suderman (who left for college) on Bass for their next concert at Cafe Auszeit on October 19, 2024. The Pickaxe Collective is excited to play there again on May 25, 2025. If you are in Dortmund at that time, you are most welcome to attend!
